How much smartphone data do I need? | 0 Comments
By brian on 03-28-2012 02:13 PM
If you have a smartphone, you have to buy a data plan as well, which could add around $360 a year or more to your bill. And recently, wireless carriers have implemented new pricing, data limits and “throttling” (cutting your data to a trickle if you use too much) that can make figuring out plans downright baffling.
You could be one of those people using a smartphone as you did your old phone — for calling and texting. In that case, you might need only a minimal plan. But discovering mobile movies, streaming music, apps and video chat is like opening a Pandora’s box (in fact, Pandora is one of the services you might get hooked on). Your data appetite could quickly grow.
If you like to email, download a few photos and post to Facebook, for example, you can possibly get by on a gigabyte per month, but if you want to stream music and watch the occasional TV show, you may need around 3 gigabytes. And if you’re a big video viewer, you’re looking at 5 gigabytes or more.
To get a sense of what you may want to do and how much data you’ll need, please see this handy chart:

Do you have the new iPad? | 0 Comments
By evp on 03-22-2012 08:19 PM
The new iPad is here and to the average consumer it might not look like much of an improvement. A quick review of the new iPad versus the iPad 2 will show that Apple has yet again done a phenomenal job of upping the ante in the tablet market. Improved retina display, better performance, crisper iSight camera, and ultrafast 4G LTE make this device worth looking at. Makes me think about trading in the iPad 2 and taking advantage of the newest improvements. Check them out:
- Improved rear camera 5MP and 1080p video recording
- A5X processor with quad core graphics processing
- 4G LTE data- up to 10X faster than 3G
- Better screen resolution, 4X more pixels than iPad 2
- 10 hours of battery life
The iPad continues to be a top seller in the tablet market and with the improvements made the new iPad it’s sure to succeed.
What’s ahead from Apple in 2012? | 0 Comments
By brian on 03-21-2012 07:55 PM
The news out of Apple at the moment is all about the new iPad and revamped Apple TV, but there’s a lot more that we can expect from Apple this year, both in terms of hardware and software. If you’re thinking of buying an Apple device this year, or are in the market for a new computer then gather round as we tell you what you can expect and when we think you can expect it.
iMac
The iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop computer. It has a big, bright display with all of the components contained behind it. The unibody design gives iMacs a small footprint on your desk to help you live the Apple minimalist dream (unless of course you cover all of that spare space with paper). What’s important about the 2012 models is that they’re almost certainly going to have Ivy Bridge chips inside. This new generation of processor from Intel promises even faster computing speeds and will undoubtedly be big news this year, likely becoming the de facto standard for computer processors in 2012. Possible release: Apple released the last iteration of the iMac in May 2011. It usually refreshes them on 10- to 12-month cycles, so our guess is we’ll see new iMacs in the next three months.
Mac Pro
Similarly named to Apple’s range of heavy-duty laptops, the Mac Pro is the powerhouse of Apple’s desktop computing range. Mac Pros are designed for people who need a computer with some serious grunt and storage capabilities, such as those who do a lot of work with still images or video, or who need to compile a lot of code. Apple hasn’t refreshed its Mac Pro line for nearly a year and a half now, and the graphics cards and processors could do with an update. Our guess is that like the iMac, Apple might be waiting to refresh this model with the shiny, new Ivy Bridge processors. There’s also a vague rumor circulating that Apple might be switching back to NVIDIA graphics cards from the ATI models currently in use.Possible release: These could show up any time now, although possibly concurrent with the refreshed iMac, as they are likely to share a processor.
iPhone 5
Fall is traditional iPhone refresh territory, so we’re a good few months off from seeing a successor to the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S was a refinement of the iPhone 4 rather than a completely reimagined device, so it’s likely that the next iPhone will again reinterpret Apple’s idea of the perfect smartphone. Rumors at this point are so farfetched and baseless that we won’t waste your time with them other than to say before the year is out, there will almost certainly be a new iPhone. Possible release: Based on previous iPhone release dates, look for something in fall 2012.
Mountain Lion OS 10.8
Scheduled to release this summer, Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) is a refinement of last year’s Lion operating system. Apple’s aims with Lion and Mountain Lion are to bring the best parts of the iOS experience to the desktop computing world — and indeed, Lion feels like a very different creature compared to its predecessor, Snow Leopard. New features in Mountain Lion include a notification tray hidden on the right side of the screen that will aggregate emails, Twitter alerts, Facebook messages, and information from various apps. This is similar to the way the notification tray works on iPads and iPhones running iOS 5. Another feature that has gathered a lot of press coverage is the new iMessages app, which Apple is touting as a universal IM client. A lot of iMessage features are already available in other IM clients, but an intriguing new feature lets you send iMessages from a Mac computer to iOS devices. If you’re using Lion, you can download iMessages beta version for free. Possible release: Apple’s website indicates a release this summer.

5 current alternative tablets to the new iPad | 0 Comments
By brian on 03-15-2012 03:09 PM
Now that the cat is out of the bag, there’s no arguing there are going to be some frenzied people heading out to their favorite Apple store come March 16th to pick up the new iPad. Knowing that it’s boasting some much-needed upgrades, some are willing to give up their old iPad 2 and pick up this new one instead – so quickly without hesitation or rational thinking. However, before you simply get caught up in all of the spectacle surrounding this most up-to-date iPad, there are some other alternatives out there in the market worth contemplating about.
Specifically, all of the competition can be found in the horde of Android-based tablets out there. Aside from their glimmering high-end status, some feature some unusual tertiary things that most people wouldn’t fathom seeing on a tablet. Whereas the new iPad maintains the same good old fashion pricing from before, these Android tablets vary in price points – thus, encompassing pretty much any budget out there. Therefore, before making a snap decision on picking up Apple’s latest pride and joy, just take a quick peek at some of the other healthy alternatives out there in the market right now.
1. Motorola DROID XYBOARD 10.1
Motorola started the whole Android tablet thing by concocting the very first Honeycomb flavored tablet in the Motorola XOOM from last year. Even though it’s not a direct successor, the Motorola DROID XYBOARD sports all the incremental improvements to associate itself as one. Not only does it bear lightning fast 4G LTE speeds for Verizon’s network, but it also employs one of the most solid constructions of any tablet around thanks to its nano-coating shell that repels some liquids. For those interested, the Wi-Fi 16GB sells for $499.99, while its 16GB 4G LTE
2. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the masses. However, after seeing the razor thin construction of the iPad 2, those Samsung engineers went back to the drawing board – thus, coming out with a total redesign. Not allowing themselves to be outdone by the competition, Samsung was able to skinny the Galaxy Tab 10.1 even more! And right now, considering that the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is amazingly skinny and lightweight by today’s standards, it easily stands out of the bunch as well.
3. Pantech Element
Looking for the most savings in a tablet? Well people, you really ought to look at the Pantech Element for AT&T, since it’s one of the few tablets on the market right now that’s water resistant and even waterproof to some extent. Sure, it has a smaller 8-inch display, but it’s still outfitted with some contemporary specs that include 16GB of internal storage, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 4G LTE connectivity. Even better, this thing can be submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes – how often can you find a tablet that does that?
4. HTC Flyer
Initially, we were going to mention the 4G LTE enabled HTC Jetstream as another alternative, but sadly, it doesn’t seem as though AT&T is selling the tablet anymore. Well, that’s hardly a surprise considering that it sported a wallet-busting price of $699.99 on-contract or $849.99 no-contract. Instead, we’d recommend the still available HTC Flyer as it offers one feature that’s not seen on most tablets – and that’s the usefulness of its optional Scribe Pen for drawing and taking notes.
5. Asus Transformer Prime
If there’s one tablet on the market that can challenge the legacy of the iPad, it’s absolutely none other than the almighty Asus Transformer Prime. Already, it has been glorified as being the poster child of the next-generation of Android tablets. So what’s special about this one? Well, for starters, it has an immaculate 10.1” LED-backlit Super IPS+ display, quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, microHDMI out, and a metallic spun finish that accentuates its meticulous construction.

Homeless Hotspot | 0 Comments
By evp on 03-15-2012 02:30 PM
This year at SXSW in Austin, TX they are trying a new method to get internet access to visitors. A marketing company called BBH Labs gave 13 homeless individuals a Verizon MiFi hotspot and a shirt that read “I am name, a 4G Hotspot”. Patrons could pay a small service fee ( typically about $2) and get the password to the Wi-Fi service and connect to the internet. All proceeds reportedly will go directly to the homeless person whose access was used.
Some are in favor of the experiment saying that is provides a job opportunity for homeless similar to selling a newspaper, while also providing a needed service for festival goers. While others state that using homeless people as a hotspot is dehumanizing, immoral and exploitative. The homeless participants seem to be delighted about the opportunity. CNN reports that participant Mark Smith said “They’re giving us the opportunity to work, You’re proving a service for the public. It’s like an individual business. ” What’s your take on it?

New Google Play combines app, music and books | 0 Comments
By brian on 03-07-2012 05:24 PM
Google is unifying its digital entertainment offerings into a single cloud-based destination called Google Play. Starting today, Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will become part of this new online emporium. Google’s Director of Digital Content Jamie Rosenberg announced Google Play in a blog post. At play.google.com, you’ll be able to store all the music, movies, books and apps you’ve previously bought through what had been separate Google stores, or visit the site to fetch new content. Google Play will be available on the Web and on Android smartphones and tablets. “Entertainment is supposed to be fun. But in reality, getting everything to work can be the exact opposite — moving files between your computers, endless syncing across your devices, and wires…lots of wires. Today we’re eliminating all that hassle,” Rosenberg wrote in the post.
Inside Google Play, you can store up to 20,000 music tracks or purchase new songs from a catalog now north of 8 million tracks. Google Play also has more than 450,000 Android apps and games available for download, and more than 4 million eBooks, which Google claims is the largest eBooks collection anywhere. You can also rent thousands of movies.
Google says the Android Market app on Android phones and tablets, as well as apps for music, books and videos will be updated over the next few days to Google Play Store, Google Play Music, Google Play Books and Google Play Movies apps. Google will push the update directly to most devices though in some instances the update will come from your carrier or handset manufacturer.
“The important point to emphasize is that none of this obviously impacts the content that users own, the libraries they have,” Rosenberg said in an interview. Folks merely log in with their Google account credentials as usual.
To get the word out Google will be offering a different album, book, video rental and Android app at a special price each day for the next week. The initial titles in this “7 Days to Play” sale in the U.S. include the collection of top 40 hits Now That’s What I Call Music 41, the game Where’s My Water, the novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and the movie Puncture for just 25 cents each. In addition, you’ll find collections of hip-hop, rock and country albums for $3.99 all week; detective novels from $2.99; some of the Google editorial team’s favorite movies from 99 cents; and favorite apps from 49 cents.

How to travel with your iphone | 0 Comments
By evp on 03-06-2012 04:15 PM
There is no doubt that the iPhone is one of the hottest devices right now. Clients are scooping them up left and right on all 3 available carriers.
Almost every day we get a call back with the question “How do I use my new iPhone internationally?”.Good question and the answer will depend on the carrier that you have. USA today did a great article on the different carriers and how to unlock your phone on each one.
- ATT does not unlock iPhones (you can buy unlocked ATT iPhones directly from Apple at retail costs)
- Verizon can be unlocked after 60 days of good standing, must follow unlocking procedure first. If you buy a foreign SIM here, you can program before travel…if you buy a SIM upon your arrival, you must have a Wi-Fi connection to activate. A domestic SIM will not work.
- Sprint can be unlocked after 90 days of good standing, Sprint iPhone will recognize automatically if it is foreign or domestic SIM (cannot use domestic SIM)
